Classical Instruction with a Modern Technique--A leader among schools
Many seek out the unique instruction offerred only at the Lynn Forbes School of Sculpture. Classes utilize the Visual Dynamics method--pioneered by Lynn Forbes--to bring back the foundational teaching of classical Greek sculpture as a starting point for further study. Ceramic clay is used in teaching to enable bisque firing of selected sculpture.

A Variety of Faces and Poses
Class Format
Classes are limited to a size of 6-10 students per model. This ensures that students receive highly individualized instruction and to get close to the model.
Students work on rolling modeling stands that allow them to freely move about the model in order to study all aspects of the three dimensional forms.
Classes Offered
Lynn Forbes stresses the importance of developing strong fudamental skills in creating portrait likenesses. For that reason, a basic portrait class is recommended for beginners.

Seated, Standing, Reclining Poses
A variety of poses are available to classes that help in the continuing development of student skills.

Several techniques are used in teaching students anatomy which is fundamental to the full understanding of human form.

As in all Greek Classical sculpture, the study of the nude form is essential to the art form.

Visual Dynamics
Lynn Forbes has refined the classical Greek techniques into a teaching method called "Visual Dynamics." Most classes are taught using ceramic clay which offers the best results with the Visual Dynamics techniques.

Unlike more rigid teaching styles often used in institutions that rely on artificial-type steps such as clay layering and calipers; Visual Dynamics is based on visually focusing on the form itself, and allowing the brain to translate information directly to the hands. Much like dance, it involves feeling, motion and emotion.

For a portrait, Visual Dynamics starts by integrating two techniques to establish the all-important foundational form. First, critical "points" are located on the face and visually mapped in the clay shape itself. Second, a "willing participant" technique is used to help the brain and hands memorize the precise form of the human face.
Then, various exercises are used to ingrain a form into the brain and also, in the case of a full body pose, to teach the sculptor to accentuate what is seen into an even more beautiful form.
